Father DeSmet rides in a Top Buggy, which is often used as the symbol of the “Horse and Buggy Days”. It was the most common vehicle of that era. Father DeSmet was a Jesuit Missionary whom the Indians referred to as “Black Robe”. He said the first mass on the plains at Daniel, Wyoming in 1840.
